The Curule
The Object
The Curule takes its name from the sella curulis, the ancient Roman magistrate’s chair. Its form echoes this dignity and authority, translated into a contemporary object of rest. Elevated yet grounded, the surface responds naturally to movement, creating comfort and support.
Formed by a gently curved base and a suspended textile surface, the Curule is defined by tension and balance rather than mass. The arched frame holds the textile in place, allowing the body to settle while remaining lightly supported. Visually open and compact, it brings structure without weight to the room.
The Use
The Curule is intended as a resting place for moments of pause throughout the day. Its elevated position keeps the animal close to everyday activity while remaining lightly separated from the floor. Designed for cats and smaller dogs, it offers a defined place to settle while staying visually open within shared living spaces.
The Materials
The Curule is made from plywood with a veneer finish, chosen for its strength and stability in a light structure. The wooden frame is finished with a food-grade mineral oil, allowing it to remain tactile while protected in daily use. The suspended textile surface is made from a hard-wearing, water-repellent fabric selected for comfort and long-term durability.
